San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith has been mediocre throughout his NFL career and as close to a bust as it gets as a former No. 1 overall draft pick. |
Would some
of my Eye On Sports NFL fans please tell me what the hell is wrong with San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith!
The mostly mediocre, near draft bust, has done absolutely
nothing throughout his career, but suddenly felt the urge to rip Carolina Panthers’
gifted signal-caller Cam Newton after helping the Niners go 13-3 this past
season.
Despite the fact that his team finished 29th in passing a
year ago – and lost to the New York Giants in the NFC title game – Smith used
Newton as an example last week to say that throwing for big numbers is
overrated when all that really matters is victories.
"I could absolutely care less on yards per game,"
Smith told a group of reporters. "I think that is a totally overblown stat
because if you're losing games in the second half, guess what, you're like the Carolina Panthers and you're going
no-huddle the entire second half. Yeah, Cam Newton threw for a lot of 300-yard
games. That's great. You're not winning, though."
Now, maybe
it’s me, but I find it absolutely hysterical that Smith, a guy that has never, ever come close to living up to being the No. 1 overall draft pick back in
2005, would pick on a guy that is coming off the greatest single season
campaign for a rookie quarterback in NFL history.
Also,
prior to San Francisco turning things around under first-year head coach Jim
Harbaugh, Smith had never led the Niners to more than seven victories in a
single season, so it’s pretty pathetic that Smith would try to make it seem
like he’s been winning double digit games every season. Even with last season’s
13-3 record on his resume, Smith still sports an uninspiring 32-34 record as a
starter, which puts him more in Rex Grossman company than Cam Newton’s.
Smith has
completed just 58.0 percent of his passes throughout his career while throwing
68 touchdowns and 58 interceptions. Smith is coming off the first 3,000-yard
passing season in 2011, but clearly was not the driving force behind Frisco’s
success last season.
No, while
Cam Newton completed 60.0 percent of his passes for a whopping 4,051
yards and did a fantastic job in leading Carolina to a solid 6-10 record in
his first season, Smith was helped out by a defense that finished second in
points allowed (14.3 ppg) and a head coach that asked him to just ‘manage’ the
game.
In short,
Alex Smith can try to make himself out to be the second coming of Tom Brady or
somebody, but the fact of the matter is that Smith is as close to a ‘bust’ as
it gets for a No. 1 overall draft pick – and he should be thanking his lucky
stars that Harbaugh wasn’t ale to find a better option last season or Smith
surely would have been a backup – or more likely – playing for another team.
Did you proofread this before you posted it? Lol
ReplyDeleteYou're a real genius!
DeleteYou're right, Alex hasn't down squat! Sure, we won more games last year than in a decade and Alex has been in charge for 6 years but still looks pretty damn poor for the league QB stats. He has done quite a bit to win games in the 4th quarter, and getting little recognition for it (compared to Eli Manning and Tim Tebow with the same stats). He has earned the right to talk a little bit. Against Cam Newton though, I think not...Do your talking on the field Alex, you're not quite their yet.
ReplyDeleteAlix did not pick on Cam he was talking about his personal opinion about a stat,no need to try to make something out of nothing.
ReplyDeleteWhat people tend to forget is the point Alex Smith was tryng to make... Running team vs Passing Team... Good defence vs Mediocre defence... Also passing yards depends on the receivers as well. See Steve Smiths 17.6 yrds per catch vs Crabtree's 12.6. The 49ers tryed to run the clock most of their games and relied on the defence and special teams to win. Also the few games on which the niners trailed (vs Eagles and a couple others) They let it fly and got the win. The panthers had to play from behind due to a bad defence and had to rely on the big play to stay competetive. They still lost most of their games even though Cam was putting sick numbers, you ask why? Well simple football is a team sport which means you need players in both sides of the ball. Does Alex Smith have a right to brag not yet.(If 49ers would had won a superball hell yes) Until them he is an Ok QB on a good team instead of a great QB on a bad team...
ReplyDeleteAlex has the right to use Cam as a example and that all is was. Cam still has to show he can play in the NFL longer than a year to be a great passing QB. We seen alot of them (QB) that first year put up Cam Number, Tell me about the one that has say longer than 2-3 yrs... Alex has still there after 6 year below subpar year, and has not taken the money and run......Harbaugh has done a great job, but Alex had to get out there and make it count.
ReplyDeleteLet see how long Cam Newton stay around after 6 OC/and def head coach......Let see how long Cam Newton last, And I Like Cam Newton I wish him the best..........This is the NFL
MR. W, YOU MISS THE MEANING OF SMITH'S COMMENTS TOTALLY. I AGREE WITH WITH THOSE OTHER COMMENTS POSTED. SMITH HAS HAD HOW MANY DIFFERENT COACHS IN HOW MANY DIFFERENT YEARS AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN GIVEN MORE CREDIT FOR DOING WHAT COACH HARBAUGH GAVE HIM AS A GAME PLAN IN 2011. NOW HE HAS EVEN MORE DANGEROUS OFFENSIVE WEAPONS TO UTILIZE AND I'M BETTING HE WILL GET SOME RESPECT IN 2012 SEASON AND MAKE A FEW MORE CONVERTS. RIGHT NOW NO ONE HAS IT BETTER THEN THIS REBORN 49ER TEAM. CONGRATULATIONS TO N.Y. GIANTS BUT THEY SHOULD SAY THANK YOU FOR THE GIFT FUMBLE IN THE PLAYOFF OVERTIME. CAM IS A GREAT PLAYER AND THE PANTHERS WILL BE A FORCE IN 2012 AS WELL.
ReplyDeleteWhile I agree with Smith in the sense that winning is more important than statistics, what Smith tried to do was take a shot at Newton. If he really wanted to rip a guy for great stats and no titles, then maybe he should have mentioned Dan Marino, but no, then everyone would have called him a classless jerk - which I believe he is. Again though, it's just an opinion!
DeleteThis is simple fellas. Alex smith is an ok qb on a good team. He had a great defense. This has happened before. Remember the Bengals with Andy Dalton? Same thing, ok qb on a good team. The d once again held onto wins. How about the 2005 Seahawks they went to the super Bowl with hasselbeck. I would say he was an ok qb. But he had a great oline and defense. Teams build around their qb not with him... Unless you have Payton Manning of course, that changed my whole argument
ReplyDelete1 Good year doesn't wash out 5 bad years. Chances are this was a career year for Smith.
ReplyDeleteAnyways it's the defense that's winning the games for them. It's how Trent Dilfer won a super bowl with the Ravens
alex smith should have mentioned dan marino, but i think he chose to make his statement with a more relevant qb. to me it seems some people may want to attack his correct statement most likely because Newton is a black qb... reminds me of when Rush L. made a statement on Mcnabb and everyone called for his head.
ReplyDeleteYou failed to mention Smith helped out his defense by only throwing 5 interceptions all season. Its easy to throw his career stats in this article, but i dont think its fair with the bad coaching he has had up to this point.
ReplyDeleteDude - I don't care what color he is,red, white, blue, black, pink or friggin purple he just better through some catchable balls this year and somehow make it through the Red Zone!! Your are the racist!!
