NCAA Cross Country Running Names Champs!

See what happens when you're the offspring of Philadelphia track and field legend George 'Papa Bear' Williams?

Running is in the family bloodlines forever!

As a former cross country runner that was one of the best in the state of Pennsylvania, like nearly three decades ago, I’m throwing out some love for my fellow long distance runners.

On Monday, in Terre Haute, Indiana, Wisconsin won the men's NCAA cross country title while Georgetown took home the women's national championship.

Mohammed Ahmed finished fifth overall to lead the Badgers to a high of 197 points to claim their first title since 2005 and fifth championship overall. The nation’s two-time defending champs, Oklahoma State finished second with 139 points.

The women of Georgetown led the school to its first NCAA cross country title by narrowly Washington by eight points, 170-162. Another two-time defending champion also saw its streak come to an abrupt halt when Villanova was relegated to a third place finish with 181 points.

Kenya native and Arizona freshman Lawi Lalang took home the individual title by winning the 10,000-meter race in 28 minutes, 44.1 seconds.

Wisconsin placed five runners in the top 35 to beat out some stiff competition.

"That's the way we ran all year, we ran together," Wisconsin coach Mick Byrne said. "They've done a remarkable job of being able to read a race. You need guys that can think for themselves out there."

Villanova senior superstar Sheila Reid defended her national title, finishing with two fingers raised with Oregon's Jordan Hasay placing second.

"It is very satisfying to win my last collegiate cross country race," Reid said. "I still have an outdoor season but coming in here as the defending champion I really wanted to finish cross country on a strong note and win the individual title again. It may sound trite but I love to win and after college the opportunities to race in cross country are limited."
