Serena weighs in on Townsend controversy!

Junior world No.1 Taylor Townsend.
Not only is Serena Williams the best female tennis player on the face of the planet, but the still-blossoming Williams is flourishing into one of her sport’s ‘elder statesmen’.

Case in point?

Williams’s recent support for world No. 1 junior tennis player Taylor Townsend.

2012 Wimbledon and U.S. Open
champion Serena Williams.
Just one day after winning her second consecutive grand slam title – and fourth U.S. Open title – Williams went on record to say that’s she bothered by the United States Tennis Association's decision to hold world No. 1 junior Taylor Townsend out of the Open because of concerns about her “fitness”.

"If that happened, that's obviously a tragedy, because everyone deserves to play," Williams said Monday, a day after winning the U.S. Open.

"She's so sweet and she works so hard," she added. "For a female, particularly, in the United States, in particular, and African-American, to have to deal with that is unnecessary. ... Women athletes come in all different sizes and shapes and colors and everything. I think you can see that more than anywhere on the tennis tour."

Townsend played at the Open, winning the junior doubles title and reaching the quarterfinals in singles.

"She's still No. 1," Williams said. "That's saying something."

Maybe it’s me, but I’ve got to say that it’s nice to see Williams growing in her new role as one of the more veteran players on the WTA Tour, now let’s hope she can impact the game and her brethren like she’s done with her on court prowess.
