Venus Williams made a triumphant return to women’s tennis by beating sister Serena 6-4, 7-6 (5) in an exhibition match in Medellin, Colombia, last Wednesday in the match for both players since the U.S. Open in September.
Venus, 31, made her return after being diagnosed with the immune system disease Sjogren’s Syndrome and showed no effects of her nearly two-year bout with the ailment that causes joint pain and fatigue.
Williams, now ranked 101st in the world, says she is now on more of a vegetable-based diet that she believes will help her get back to the top of the sport she once ruled.
“My goal next year is to play a full schedule, Williams said. “It will take some work to get there, but I'm no stranger to hard work.I love the game. The racket feels right in my hand and I'm planning on going right back to where I was at the top of the rankings in the singles and doubles sometime within the next 12 months.”
The Williams sisters will play Italians Francesca Schiavone and Flavia Pennetta in another exhibition in Milan on Dec. 3.
