Taking about reaching…Cowboys sign Jon Kitna

So, the Dallas Cowboys don’t have a third string quarterback to back up veteran signal-caller Kyle Orton so they had to go out and sign former NFL signal-caller Jon Kitna in order to help keep whatever postseason hopes they have alive.

Kitna, 41, hasn't played since backing up Cowboys starter Tony Romo for three games back in 2011. Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett signed the grizzled veteran after just one phone call despite working out three other quarterbacks, stating that the formerly retired veteran knows the team’s offense and has plenty of experience having started 124 games in his NFL career.

Romo, Cowboys win…But Trouble Still Looms for beleaguered ‘Boys

The DallasCowboys may have managed to keep their season alive for another week as they get set for their Week 17 season-ending finale against NFL East division rival Philadelphia, but it looks like fool’s gold from where I’m sitting.

This team is banged-up, lacking leadership and in complete denial about the state of their franchise from top to bottom. Meanwhile, the Philadelphia Eagles are flying high coming into this contest off an overwhelming 54-11 thrashing of Chicago in Week 16.

Duh Jerry…Ya’ Think?

Dallas Cowboys owner/GM Jerry Jones

Would somebody please tell me what the hell is wrong with Dallas Cowboy owner jerry Jones (and no I don’t have all day to list to his numerous faults).

On Tuesday, Jones comes out with an admission that every NFL football fan in the world already knew…that the Boys dropped the ball in a big way by blaming their dysfunctional 2012 season at the feet of their former defensive coordinator even though it was clear Rob Ryan’s defense was not the problem a year ago.

49-17 this past Sunday, Jones offered his take on the decision to part ways with Ryan.

"We thought it was best for us to go in the direction that we are, and it doesn't look good right now," Jones said. After allowing an NFL-record four quarterbacks to pass for at least 400 yards this season.

Jerry Not Very … Bright … Or Open to Change!

Okay NFL gridiron gang, maybe it’s me, but I’m really trying hard to figure out what the hell is wrong with Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones!

If Jones hasn’t learned by now that an NFL owner that acts as his own general manager is akin to a fool representing himself in a court of law, then I guess he’s more of a lunatic than I ever thought.

Jones, whose Cowboys have won just one playoff game since 1996 while making just six postseason appearances since that time, is still apparently living in the past when the team was in its heyday under former head coach Jimmy Johnson, who was the driving force behind drafting many of the players that led the ‘Boys to prominence, even though Jones had the official GM title.

Of course, Jones wanted to take all of the credit which caused problems that forced the beloved head coach to move on to greener pastures. Since then, the Cowboys have failed miserably – and Jones has been the man at the helm of the team’s football operations.

Ruh-Roh, Romo!

Yup, Eye on Sports followers, that’s Scooby-Doo talk for Uh-oh Romo, as in your window of opportunity to win a Super Bowl is closing faster than the Wal-Mart cashier that’s leaving for the day.

I’m not trying to ‘hate’ on Romo, but I always say he plays big in small moments and small in big moments – and that is a fact, not just some frivolous banter either.

Think about it for a minute, the Cowboys have several issues they need to address if they want to become a legitimate Super Bowl title contender, but will solving those issues take another season or two, which would then put Romo well into the downside of his star-crossed career?


I think it's very possible.

I say the Dallas Cowboys had better draft a pair of young quarterbacks this year ... one in the early middle rounds of the draft and one a round or two after that, in order to really prepare for Romo’s departure. Either that, or try to acquire some other team's talented young backup, a la, Houston's T.J. Yates.

Until then, I’m giving Tony Romo one more season to get the Cowboys into the NFC title game at the least – or it’s time to part ways with the affable, but often perplexing, Tony Romo.

Life After Romo Quickly Approaching!

Maybe it’s me, but I’m thinking the Dallas Cowboys had better really start looking to replace incumbent starter Tony Romo with it becoming clearer by the day that the inconsistent signal-caller just isn’t the guy to get the job done in the Big D. 

Were it not for Romo (okay, and Jason Garrett), the Cowboys would likely have 10 or 11 wins right now instead of the eight they have heading in their regular season closer. The good news for Dallas fans that are worried about a lengthy rebuilding plan under a young starter should be encouraged by the success of so many young quarterbacks in recent years, several of whom were not high draft picks. 

Garrett’s No Genius!

If you’re a Dallas Cowboys fan, then you’re probably still sick to your collective stomachs after seeing head coach Jason Garrett pull off one of the most idioticcoaching jobs I’ve ever seen in four decades of watching NFL football.

Late in the fourth quarter of Dallas’ 19-13 overtime loss to Arizona, Garrett foolishly failed to call a timeout after enigmatic wideout Dez Bryant mad a grab over the middle to give the ‘Boys a first down on the Cardinals’ 32-yard line.

Bryant made the grab with 31 seconds remaining – before Garrett and idiotic quarterback Tony Romo let the clock run all the way down to seven seconds – before spiking the ball.

Then, what ensued afterward will have Cowboys haters like myself doubled over in laughter for years to come.

Dallas kicker Dan Bailey lined up to attempt a game-winning 49-yard field goal and kicked the ball cleanly through the uprights as time expired. But wait …. Just a split-second before Bailey kicked the ball someone called timeout in an apparent effort to ‘ice’ Bailey into a missed kick.

Shockingly, the time out was called by Bailey’s own coach.

Too bad Garrett doesn’t know which team’s kicker to ‘ice’ because sure enough, Bailey went out and missed the ensuing ‘real’ attempt.

Shortly thereafter, the Cowboys gave up a thrilling 52-yard catch-and-run TD reception to fleet-footed little man LaRod Stephens-Howling not long into overtime, giving the ‘Boys what has to be one of their strangest – and most disappointing losses in franchise history.

"I think the biggest thing that you try to do is evaluate the situation, how you handled it and why you made that decision," Garrett said. "If you get in that situation again, do you handle it that way or handle it differently?"

Huh?
