Oh…about that Jay Cutler decision

I’ll say it again…I genuinely believe the Chicago Bears made a huge mistake by demoting a red-hot Josh McCown in favor of starter, Jay Cutler once the polarizing signal-caller was cleared from injury to participate in the Bears’ Week 16 matchup against Philadelphia. Cutler wasn’t horrific – but he also wasn’t far from it.

If Cutler struggles early on against Green Bay in the team’s NFC North regular season finale, should the Bears turn to McCown?

Wow, Sam Hurd is Nutso!

Okay, I know it’s old news by now, but so what, I’d rather be late than not show up at all. Having said that, let me just say that former Chicago Bears wide receiver – and reputed wanna’ be drug dealer Sam Hurd is totally nutso!

This idiot allegedly wanted to become some big-time drug dealer even though he’s being paid millions to play football!

Maybe it’s the law-abiding citizen in me that’s talking, but all I can think of ‘ this fool deserves whatever he gets’.

Sorry Sam I most certainly am Not!

Brothers Battle Over the League’s Best Back!

Okay, I was prepared to write a short blurb describing my feelings on Philadelphia Eagles running back LeSean McCoy being the best back in the league – until I got into a very real, but not overly heated – disagreement with my brother Keith Branch.

What an educated argument it was too, with both of us sounding like former Rhodes Scholar recipients.

Me: LeSean McCoy’s the best back in the league.

Keith: No, he’s not.

Me: Yes he is.

Keith: No, E, he’s not! His weakness is running up the middle.

Me: They said the same thing about Reggie Bush and didn’t he just bust one up the gut this weekend?

 

Okay, okay … after I conceded that Adrian Peterson or Matt Forte could be ‘better’ than McCoy, off we went again with the back and forth surrounding Philly’s elusive touchdown-maker.

Just to back up my argument, McCoy is ranked second in the league and is tied for the highest average yards per carry mark in the league for a back with at least 200 carries (4.9 yards).

Okay, I’ll admit that my brother’s argument also has its merits, no doubt, with McCoy ironically being tied with Chicago’s Forte and the Chargers’ Ryan Matthews.

Oh – and Reggie Bush has topped them all by averaging 5.0 yards per carry on 194 attempts.

So, maybe my brother and I are both wrong – and to be honest – it wouldn’t be a first – even if neither of us readily admits it!

Brian Urlacher’s A Tebow Hater Too!

Like Charles Barkley, apparently, Brian Urlacher is a ‘hater’ too – and not a real good judge of quarterbacks either.

Urlacher joined Barkley on the Tim Tebow ‘Hate Train’ following his Chicago Bears’ 13-10 loss to Tebow’s Denver Broncos on Sunday by saying of denver’s gifted young signal-caller, “He’s a good running back, man. He runs the ball well,” Urlacher said.

Maybe it’s me, but maybe Urlacher doesn’t know that it was Tebow’s 18 completions in the fourth quarter and overtime that really hurt Chicago.

Maybe if Urlacher stopped worrying about Tebow’s running he would have been able to better defend some of

those late-game passes.

Nooooooooooo!

Reports on Monday alleged that former NFL quarterback Brett Favre would consider coming out of retirement in order to help the quarterback-depleted Bears make a run at the postseason over the team’s final handful of games.

I’m just going to throw my feelings out there by saying that it’s a sad day when NFL teams are desperate enough to go the nursing home to get a washed-up veteran that clearly proved he was shot a season ago.

Thankfully, Bears head coach Lovie Smith seems set in his belief that the Bears can finish out the season with Caleb Hanie leading the way.

"That's our group," Smith said of the Bears' trio of quarterbacks on their roster. "We're going to make improvements with our group. We're not looking on the outside. We won't have a quarterback tryout or anything like that."

NFC North is Mr. Rodgers' Neighborhood!

NFC North Okay, I’m a lifelong Miami Dolphins fan that revels in the fact that the ’72 Fins are the only team in league history to finish an entire season undefeated, but I gotta’ admit that this year’s version of the Green Bay Packers looks like it really has the ability to pull off the coveted undefeated season! By the way … if you don’t know, Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is now the best signal-caller in all of football.

You know, I was really high on Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Hanie following his fine performance in last season NFC Title game, so I’m going to give the young man the benefit of the doubt for his pitiful performance on Sunday. Still, I can see the Bears’ season slip-sliding away!

Detroit Lions No. 2 overall draft pick Ndamukong Suh is ridin’ dirty NFL fans. The athletically gifted defensive lineman is undoubtedly a special player, but he could be in the process of alienating himself with officials around the league – and we all know that once you get a reputation, whether deserved or not, it’s hard to shake.

The Minnesota Vikings may be going through a rough stretch this season, but I think the team could find its way back to respectability at some point in the very near future. While I’ve been impressed with rookie quarterback Christian Ponder and absolutely love gifted running back Adrian Peterson, I’ve got to admit that I’m very disappointed in Leslie Frazier in his first full season as a head coach after the longtime defensive coordinator waited for years to get his chance.

Tale of Two Signal-Callers

Houston Texans backup quarterback Matt Leinart looked really good in completing 10 of 13 passes with one touchdown pass in the Texans’ 20-13 win over Jacksonville on Sunday.

Chicago Bears backup signal-caller Caleb Hanie looked absolutely miserable in completing just 18 of 36 first half passes while throwing three first half interceptions and botching a game-ending spike play.

So which quarterback got lost for the remainder of the regular season?

Matt Leinart of course … and just when ken Whisenhunt’s worst enemy was getting his first shot to play in nearly two seasons.
